This Project Integrates Sustainable Green Architecture With Heritage | Kham Design

The spatial configuration of the Shivaprasad Residence comprises a living area, a dining, a kitchen and a bedroom on the ground floor.

Spatial Layout

It features an open layout, connecting living spaces seamlessly with each other. The dining space, being open to the skylight, serves as a conduit for light and ventilation into the interiors at different levels. The choice of materials makes the space vibrant.

The first floor of the residence encompasses a family room, a workspace, and a bedroom. The living room incorporates sustainable materials and vernacular wooden elements.

The strategic placement of spaces and materials maximises a sense of comfort, privacy, and welcome. The family room on the first floor provides connectivity between the spaces at its level.

The placement of the office, library, or study space on the first floor makes the environment suitable for studying or performing similar activities. The incorporation of natural light and ventilation through the skylight supports the space for its function.

Contextual Sensitivity

By integrating these elements, the first-floor design exemplifies a harmonious blend of modern architectural principles with sustainable practices and traditional aesthetics, contributing to the overall narrative of the residence as a model of environmentally conscious and contextually sensitive design.

The main captivating element of the project is the placement of the living room. Due to the presence of a car park in front and to avoid the sense of regular rental premises on the ground floor, the living room is placed on the mezzanine floor, about 7-8 feet from the road level. The placement of this space in the mid-level further strikes a sense of visual connection between the floors.

The second floor comprises a bedroom and a skylight, which diffuses natural light and ventilation into the interiors, thereby regulating their thermal comfort.

Design Elements

A well-played level is achieved in the residence through the staircases and the placement of the landing, which in turn acts as a seater too. Elements like staircases or bay windows provide a place to relax. The bay windows in the residence make the indoor space feel larger and more connected to the outdoors.

Materials like clay brick walls, stone walls, pot filler slabs, Athangudi tiles, porotherm blocks, jalli blocks, and glass blocks are widely used in the residence. In order to maintain the cool microclimate, terracotta is used to regulate the overall thermal comfort.

Each of these materials brings unique benefits, from aesthetic appeal and durability to sustainability and functionality. These are used in various combinations to enhance the design, comfort, privacy, and efficiency of the residence.
